Brewery Profile
Brewery: Kato Kichibee Shoten
Founded: 1860
Location: Fukui Prefecture
Profile:
Kato Kichibee Shoten began as a money exchange business deeply rooted in the local community. In 1860, the village headman—who would become the founder—expanded into sake brewing. The brewery has since been passed down through eleven generations, proudly carrying the Kichibee name. In 1866, the brewery officially registered its trademark.
The brand name “Born” comes from Sanskrit, meaning “purity” or “striking truth,” reflecting the brewery’s strong belief in second chances and the karmic rewards of hard work. In the early Shōwa era (1926–1989), Born sake was selected for imperial ceremonies, festivals, and official guests, establishing it as one of Japan’s representative sake brands.
