Collection: Sasaki Sake Brewery

From Founding to the Present

In 1871 (Meiji 4), the first-generation Shinsuke Sasaki established a sake brewery in Yuriage, a thriving port town that once served the Date Domain, while expanding his business from transportation into various fields. The brewery was named "Nami no Oto" (Sound of Waves), and its signature sake was called "Hosen Nami no Oto" (Treasure Ship's Whispering Waves).

Since its founding, the brewery has upheld the belief that "local sake is the liquid expression of a region’s culture." Using locally grown rice and the underground spring water of the Natori River, which flows right in front of the brewery, they have crafted sake that embodies the lives, cuisine, and spirit of the community.

With Nanbu Toji (master brewers) leading production, the brewery operated as a small-scale sake producer. However, on March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and the ensuing tsunami completely destroyed and washed away the facility. Yet, from two tanks that miraculously survived the disaster, the brewery was able to restart its sake-making journey once again.
